William was probably the son of William HODGE and Jenny HAMLIN, who married on 25 Aug 1761 at Moreton Hampstead, Devon, England (ref IGI records). William's death has not been identified in IGI as Hodge is a very frequent name in Devon records. There is a marriage of Mary HODGE, widow, to Thomas GARNSWORTHY, bachelor, on 3 May 1818 (believed to be on the original parish record) or 1819 (on the IGI index). 7.		James SERLE Bap 27 Mar 1777 in Kenton Parish, Devon, England (ref KPR and K IGI records). Marr 3 Jan 1804 in Kenton Parish to Agnes DUNSFORD (listed as Agness Densford in the IGI record) (ref KPR and K IGI records). She was probably the Agnes who was christened (as AGNISS) on 17 Mar 1776 at Farringdon, Devon, daughter of William and Ann (ref IGI). She may have been a dau of William DUNSFORD and Ann NICKS, who were married on 23 Jan 1760 at Broad Clyst (ref IGI); there are 4 children baptised at Broad Clyst with father William Dunsford and no mother given, being Thomas (1761), Mary (1763), William (1766), Ann (1770). Broad Clyst is about 8 km (about 5 miles) from Farringdon which makes this a likely scenario. James' occupation was mariner, fisherman and cobbler. [Serle incorrectly indexed as Sarle.] James died 17th Oct 1855. The death was reg Sep qtr 1855 at St Pancras district (ref FreeBMD). 'Buried in the churchyard at Starcross, Devon. The inscription reads "In memory of James Serle who died October 17th. 1855 aged 78. Also of Agnes Serle his wife who died Nov 18th 1845 aged 69 and was buried in St. Giles' Cemetery, Old St. Pancras, London". In the Will of James, most of the considerable estate was bequeathed to his daughter Eliza Horsman, consisting of a house in London and five cottages in Devon (ref Will).
