Bap 5 Mar 1790 in Kenton Parish, Devon, England, son of Will & Mary (name given as Hodges) (ref K IGI records).

William may have married Sarah TRACY; the Banns finished on 15 Sep 1811 at All Saints, Kenton, but the marriage record is not in fmp.

Burial of William Hodge 27 Aug 1826 at Kenton, aged 37, abode Star Cross (ref fmp Devon Burials).

Bap 29 May 1791 in Kenton Parish, Devon, James, son of William Hodge & Mary his wife (ref K IGI records & fmp Devon Baptisms).

Marriage 19 Oct 1818 at St Botolph, Bishopgate, London, of James Hodge to Elizabeth Sophia TRIGGS; both were of that parish; by banns; witnesses John Serle, Mary Dunsford (ref Ancestry London Marriages). It is not certain which John Serle this is, but the Mary Dunsford signature is that of Mary born c1792, daughter of Thomas Dunsford who was brother of Agnes Dunsford who married James Serle, James' Hodge's uncle. They are on the same level as a type of cousin connected by the marriage of his uncle to her aunt, and perhaps both being in London made a connection for them. Elizabeth was christened 13 Jul 1795 in Gidleigh Parish, Devon, England (as Elisabeth) (ref IGI records), dau of William TRIGGS and Elizabeth.

Prior to 1841 James became Master and Elizabeth became Matron of St Thomas Poor Law Union Workhouse, in St Thomas parish, west of Exeter.

The Harriett Lucas mentioned as a niece below was a daughter of Mary Lucas but a marriage has not been found for an Elizabeth Lucas to John Hodge and Harriett may have been a great-niece or other relative. No connection has been found with Joanna Lucas (below).

George married Sarah, surname unknown, born c1801 at Bishop Stortford, Herts (ref 1851 census), or c1791 at Seavington, Somerset (ref 1861 census).

His occupation was given as Mariner on one occasion. Various letters relating to him exist in family archives of E.Shade. The census records say that he was a proprietor of houses, and a retired tailor.

Because of the great difference of ages and birthplaces of wives Sarah in 1851, it is possible that they are two separate people, and there is a marriage of a George Hodge to Sarah Scott in Mar qtr 1859 at Wellington dist, Somerset (ref FreeBMD). However, more information is needed to be sure.

When he died on 25 Sep 1877 at Langport Somerset, from dropsy, he was quite wealthy and left an estate valued at over 2000 pounds. Beneficiaries in Australia at the time were Alfred Hodge, his sister Mary Ann and cousin Charles each receiving 110 pounds. (ref Pat Hodge 2006).

Burial of Edward Serle 3 Dec 1877 at Starcross aged 74 (ref fmp Devon Burials). The record contains the annotation "Killed on Thursday Nov 29 at 2:36 by the down train S D R while crossing the line".
"FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE RAILWAY AT STARCROSS. A man named Edward Serle, about 75 years of age, was killed yesterday afternoon by the train due at Starcross at 2 36. He was crossing from the river side of the line and had waited for the up train then just leaving the station, but did not observe the down train then just leaving the station, but did not observe the down train, and directly he got on the line he was caught and dreadfully mutilated. His remains are now at the Courtenay Arms, where an inquest will be held."

Married Maria COLLINS. The marriage record has not been found. Maria's mother was Elizabeth Collins (ref 1851 and 1861 census below). There is a birth of a Maria Taylor Collins 26 Jun 1818, bap 8 Jul 1818 at Exeter, Independent denomination, dau of Robert & Elizabeth Collins; the description is Exeter, Castle Street (Independent) Births & Baptisms so it is possible that the marriage was in this independent denomination and the marriage record has not been recorded in fmp.

According to family legend, he went to London c1825-30 together with his brothers Frederick and Thomas.

Married 24 May 1832, in Holy Trinity, Exeter, Devon, Mary SOUTHON, born 9 Mar 1807, London, England (daughter of James SOUTHON and Hannah SUMMERSETT; ref IGI records for their marriage, Mary's birth and the marriage of James and Mary). (Ref her DC.) The name is spelt Southon on both Mary and James' DC and their son Walter's BC in 1839 although it sometimes appears in Devon as Southern. See the related

They were at Charlton Street, St Pancras for the bapt of Frederick in 1834. They were at 50 Drummond St in 1839 (where he was a Pianoforte Maker), and for the birth of Jessie (1843) and the death of Agnes (1845).

In the Will of his father James written in 1854 (dcd. 1855), most of the considerable estate was bequeathed to Eliza Horsman. Other beneficiaries with small cash amounts included James and his children Frederick, Walter & Eliza (but not Edwin or Jessie).

Several emotional letters exist in the archives of E.Shade from James Serle to his family while they were parted.
Mary arrived in Victoria 20 Aug 1857 on the "Undaunted" with Eliza, Walter and Jessie.

James is listed as the Licensee of the Devonshire Arms Hotel, 36 Fitzroy St, Fitzroy, Victoria, at Apr 1859 (ref Vol 4, pg 104, Cole/Tetlow index of hotel records, State Library of Victoria online). See photograph. His daughter Eliza also ran this hotel for a period up to 1865. See a notice in The Argus of Tues 29 Dec 1863:
"At the Fitzroy Police Court yesterday. James Serle, landlord of the Devonshire Hotel, for not haveing a lamp alight in the front of his premises, was fined 2s. 6d., and costs."

Mary died 13 Feb 1861 at 22 Fitzroy Street, Collingwood, Vic (Vic reg 206), bur 14 Feb 1861 at St Kilda Cem, C of E, B No. 148. (Ref her DC.) No probate found.
"Funeral Notices. The Friends of Mr James Serle are respectfully invited to follow the remains of his late wife to St. Kilda Cemetery. Funeral to leave his residence, Devonshire Hotel, Gertrude-street, Collingwood, at 3 o'clock this day, February 14." (ref The Argus, Thurs 14 Feb 1861, Trove)

In Oct 1861 their daughter Jessie died at the Devonshire Arms.

James died 3 Nov 1877 at 240 Albert Street, Melbourne, Victoria (Vic reg 11672), bur 5 Nov 1877 at St Kilda Cem, C of E No 0555. Information given by his son Walter Henry Serle of Powlett Street, East Melbourne. (Ref his DC.) No probate found.

He went to London 1825-30 according to family lore, but not found in 1841 census.

The marriage was 25 Jul 1841 at St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney; Frederick was full age, bachelor, Builder, of 13 Grosvenor Street, son of James Serle, Cordwainer; Elizabeth was full age, spinster, of 14 Portland Street, dau of Thomas Buttress, Mariner; witnesses were Elizabeth Hutchins, Mary Hammard (ref Ancestry London Marriages).

Elizabeth was bap 25 Feb 1807 at Deal, Kent, dau of Thomas & Elizabeth Buttress (ref Ancestry England Select Births & Christenings); Thomas Buttress married Elizabeth Knight 11 Aug 1803 at Deal, Kent (ref Ancestry England Select Marriages). The name Eliza Knight comes from Elizabeth's death registration.
