It may not be a coincidence that James' father's second marriage was to an Emma Whistler, however, she was baptised in Berkshire.

John and Sarah migrated to Australia approximately 1871/72, after the census. It is not known when the children migrated as Sarah was still in England in 1881, but they had all reached Australia by 1895.

Death reg of Sarah Jane Beal 1872 in Victoria, dau of Richard Brimage, aged 34 (Vic reg 10232). Sarah Jane Beal died 13 Oct 1872 at the Bird in Hand Hotel, Plenty Road, East Preston; housewife; buried at Coburg Cemetery (though not found in their online record); 7 months in Victoria (ref death cert via Linda Plant).

John married (2) marr reg 1873 in Victoria of John Dean Beal to Sarah Ann JEPHSON (Vic reg 3841).
They had at least three children, Madeline Clarabel Alice (1875-1875), John (1876-1876), Evelyn Mary (1877-1878) and it is curious that he had a second child called John.

John Dean Beal died 11 Jan 1881 in Wagga Wagga NSW (1822/010261, not registered until 1882) (ref Linda Plant).

He served in the Zulu War of 1879 and the First Aglo-Boer War of 1881. In 1886 he was promoted to Major. In 1In 1891 he was promoted to Lieut.-Colonel and was given command of the 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment.

In 1897 he was made Colonel and given command of the 8th (the King's Liverpool Regiment) and the 40th (the Prince of Wale's Colunteers, South Lancashire Regiment) Regimental District.

Presumably Arthur was named after Thomas Graves, Thomas Abel Brimage Spratt's commanding officer for many years, who was later attacked by a Maltese boatman and died of his wounds. Information is available in the Malta Family History site.

Arthur Graves Spratt entered the Army as a Lieutenant in June 1875 and attained the rank of Major in November 1892. He served in the campaign on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98, with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 1st Battalion Devonshire Regiment, and was present at the capture of Sampagha and Arhanga Passes. He later served with the regiment in the South African War."
