The "England & Wales Civil Divorce Records, 1858-1911" at Ancestry contain the April 1858 Divorce application by Jane Ann Brimage Warren vs George Goss Warren which states he had abandoned her in January 1849 and gone to Australia where he was reported by friends as leading a reckless life. She, left with her 2 young children and no source of income, was in poor health and dependent on her mother for support. She states that despite writing to him many times, she had only 2 letters from him and had no heard from him since 1853. She was apparently granted a legal separation; the legal opinion given at the time of her application stated that she couldn't afford the cost of a divorce, so a legal separation would serve the purpose. (Information provided by Jean Milne 2014)

"Court of Probate & Divorce - Monday (before Judge Ordinary):
WARREN V. WARREN
This was a suite for a judicial separation brought by Mrs. Jane Ann Warren against her husband, George Warren, on the ground of desertion for two years and upwards. Dr. Addams applied to the Court to suspend the proceedings against Mr. Warren. That gentleman was in Australia, where he had been served with the citation, and he had forwarded to this county an answer setting forth circumstances under which he separated from his wife; and he had also intimated his intention of returning to England. In fact, he proposed to return in the very first sailing ship in which he could secure a passage. The object of the delay was that the husband might have an opportunity of answering his wife's petition more fully. The Court would give him two months' time to plead."
(ref London Standard, Tues 21 December 1858, page 6)
