Bap 24 Dec 1820 at Hutton Magna, Yorkshire, Sarah, dau of John & Elizabeth Wardle (ref fmp, Northumberland & Durham Baptisms and FamilySearch C063271 & I04150-1) Sarah's death certificate states that she was born c1819 at West Leyten, Yorkshire, England and married at age 29 at St Mary's, Strand, London. The only discrepancy is that her death cert gives her parents as John Waddell, farmer and Sarah Ann Waddell, but this is must be mistaken, as there is so much evidence to support the identification of this Sarah with the one who married John Chinery in London. Her sisters Mary, Ann and Phoebe all left Yorkshire and married in London, together with Sarah herself. This was uncommon in the Wardle family.

Ref 1841 census. Yorkshire, England. Parish of Hutton Magnum. Registration district of Richmond. Address: West Layton, Hutton Magnum.
Together with 6 siblings and a niece:
Sarah Wardel. Age 15. Born Yorkshire.
(On the day of their mother's funeral)

Several of the sisters including Mary, Sarah, Ann and Phoebe moved to London by the eighteen forties.

On 5 June 1848, Sarah "Wardel" married John CHINERY at the Parish Church in the Parish of St Mary Le Strand, Middlesex (ref FamilySearch M042891 and marriage certificate held by LS). Marr reg Jun qtr 1848 at Strand dist (re FreeBMD). From the marriage certificate, John was aged 26, a bachelor, son of John Chinery, Labourer. Sarah was aged 28, a spinster, dau of John Wardel, Husbandman. Both were Servants, and the residence of both was Somerset Hotel, Strand, which implies that they were actually employed as servants at that hotel. John's death certificate states that they were married at Somerset Hotel, Strand, which indicates slight confusion.

John was bap 22 July 1821 at St Gregory, Sudbury, Suffolk, England (ref IGI and parish record). John, Sarah and baby Thomas Chinnery set out on the vessel 'Sir George Seymour' to migrate to Australia, leaving Plymouth on 9 Jan 1849. Baby Thomas died aged 6 months on 12 April 1849 of bronchitis. John was listed as a gentleman's servant age 28 going to Depot, Geelong, and Sarah age 29 as housekeeper to the same place. The vessel arrived in Victoria on 14 May 1849 after a journey of 126 days. John and Sarah lived in Geelong, Victoria and had 6 further known children.

Sarah died 30 Dec 1871 off McKillop Street, Geelong, Vic, buried Geelong Cemetery, Church of Ehgland age 52 (ref her Death Cert) (Vic reg 8471). The informant was daughter Mary Chinery of Geelong.

John died 13 May 1876, off Corio Street, Geelong, Vic, buried Geelong Cemetery, Church of England age 54 (ref his Death Cert) (Vic reg 5623). The informant was daughter Annie Chinery of Geelong.

"THREAT TO MURDER, AND LIBELS ON A RAILWAY ENGINEER. At Ilford (Sussex) [actually Essex] Petty Sessions, on Saturday, Robert Wardle was charged with sending abusive and scurrilous letters to Mr. S. W. Johnson, the chief engineer of the Great Eastern Railway Company, threatening to murder him, and also charged with publishing gross and scandalous libels concerning the same gentleman. ...The prisoner had been for some years in the employ of the company as foreman of the smiths at Stratford, but in 1867 he was discharged by Mr. Johnson for intemperance and irregular conduct. Mr. Johnson was the chief engineer of the company, and ever since the dismissal of the prisoner a series of letters had been sent through the post by the prisoner ... nearly 200 had been sent by the prisoner during the past three years. ..The Bench ultimately committed the prisoner for trial at the Central Criminal Court, and declined to entertain the question of bail."
