CHINERY Bap 22 Jul 1821 at St Gregory, Sudbury, Suffolk, England (ref IGI and parish rec). Occupation Labourer (ref his Death Cert), Brewer's Employe (1914 DC of daughter Phoebe) Marr 5 Jun 1848 at Saint Mary Le Strand, Westminster, London to Sarah WARDEL (ref IGI). Her death cert also states her marriage was at age 29 at St Mary's, Strand, London. John's death cert states that they were married at Somerset Hotel, Strand, London which is less likely. Sarah's name was sometimes spelt Waddell, Wardel and Wardle. It seems most likely that Sarah was the daughter of John and Elizabeth and was bap 24 Dec 1820 at Hutton Magna, Yorkshire, England. In the 1841 census at the township of West Layton, in the civil parish of Hutton Magna, and the registration district of Richmond, there is a group of people (Robert, Henry, Sarah, Ann, Phoeby, Jane with the surname Wardel) that belong to the same family, and their baptisms can be found in the IGI. Sarah's death certificate states that she was born c1819 at West Leyten, Yorkshire, England. The only discrepancy is that her death cert gives her parents as John Waddell, farmer and Sarah Ann Waddell, but this could be mistaken. John, Sarah and baby Thomas Chinnery set out on the vessel 'Sir George Seymour' to migrate to Australia, leaving Plymouth on 9 Jan 1849. Baby Thomas died aged 6 months on 12 April 1849 of bronchitis. John was listed as a gentleman's servant age 28 going to Depot, Geelong, and Sarah age 29 as housekeeper to the same place. The vessel arrived in Victoria on 14 May 1849 after a journey of 126 days. See attached document for more details. John was described as being of native place Sudbury, Suffolk. Religious denomination Episcopalian. Both John and Sarah could both read and write and were possessed of a Bible. May have lived at Little Ryrie Street, Geelong (check source) Sarah died 30 Dec 1871 off McKillop Street, Geelong Vic buried Geelong Cemetery, Church of England age 52 (ref her Death Cert) (Vic reg 8471). The informant was daughter Mary Chinery of Geelong. John died 13 May 1876, off Corio Street, Geelong, Vic, buried Geelong Cemetery, Vic, Cof E age 54 (ref his Death Cert) (Vic reg 5623). The information was daughter Annie Chinery of Geelong. |
