According to Percival Serle, he was a handsome man with black hair and blue eyes, much vivacity, and fine manners. There was some suggestion that there was a French strain in his family. He was sent to a good school which Percival's mother thought was Eton, but his name does not appear on the school list. He studied medicine, then was left some legacies and went into business as an auctioneer and valuer of antiques.

They made their headquarters with 'an aunt of my mother's, Mrs. Wood, their house was just outside the Harrow-Weald station on the London and North-Western railway about 11 miles from London...it was then lovely pastoral country'. The name 'Harrow' was used later for the Serle houses in Melbourne. Sarah Susan Watson (Mrs Wood) was Emily's sister.
