The identification of this William with the marriages to Elizabeth Coombe and Elizabeth Pengelly and a Settlement document (which is available, for which the purpose is unclear) has been the subject of much discussion among researchers. Signatures of the Settlement and the Coombe marriage are very similar. In the Settlement document William said he was born in the parish of Marystowe and was residing in Marystowe in 1786.

My hypothesis is that the above William is one and the same with the following details. It is possible that this is incorrect and that further discoveries may refute this, as there were other William Bickles in the county at the time.

Married (1) 21 Apr 1785 at Marystowe to Elizabeth COOMBE. The record reads "No 58. Banns of Marriage between William Bickle (Bachelor) Sojourner in this Parish and Elizabeth Coombe (Spinster) of the same were duly published on three several Sundays in the church of this Parish without denial. The said William Bickle and Elizabeth Coombe were married in this Church by Banns this twentyfirst Day of April in the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and eighty five by me John T. Spry Vicar. This Marriage was solemnized between Us William Bickle, the Mark of Elizabeth Coombe, In the Presence of John Bevan, Samuel Martin."

An Elizabeth Bickle was buried at Milton Abbott on 1 Feb 1789.

Married (2) 9 Sep 1793 at Calstock, Cornwall to Elizabeth PENGELLY. The bride's name was spelt Pengellay (ref findmypast). The wedding was by Banns; the groom's residence was "sojourner otp" and the bride's residence "otp" [presumed to mean out of parish]; the witnesses were Josh. Williams and Richard Hearn (ref Cornwall online parish clerk). Her most probable baptism is 25 Apr 1773 at Calstock, Cornwall, dau of William and Mary Pengelly.

There is a burial of William Bickle 19 Feb 1832 at Calstock, Cornwall aged 65 which could be him (ref findmypast). Also in findmypast there is a burial of William Bickell 14 Feb 1832 at Walkhampton, Devon aged 65. These records may relate to the same person, and it can be noted that his grandchildren were born in Walkhampton in 1838 and 1839.

Ref 1841 census. Cornwall, England. Civil Parish of Callington. Registration district of Liskeard. Address: Southgate, Callington.
Together with dau Elizabeth (36) and her children:
Elizabeth Bickel. Age 68. Gate Keeper. Not born in Cornwall.

(Probably) Elizabeth's death reg Sep qtr 1845 at Liskeard dist, Cornwall (ref FreeBMD). This includes Calstock.
William was named as a Thatcher in the baptisms of 1794, 1799, 1801, 1803, 1805, 1807, 1811, 1813 and 1815.
