His father was a leading man of labourers in the Dockyard, and by industry and frugality his parents managed to bring up rather a numerous family in some degree of respectability. Being the youngest of the family Robert received the greatest indulgence from his parents, and his mother seemed particularly fond of him. His childhood was marked by none of that extreme ferocity and cruelty which chacterized the fearful crime for which he pays the penalty with his life. No particular incidents marked his early days other than getting into scrapes through idleness." (ref British Newspapers in fmp, Maidstone Journal and Kentish Advertiser 14 April 1863) As reported in the previous generation he committed a murder on 23 Jul 1862 which was reported in the Western Daily Press 1 Aug 1862: "THE MURDER ON CHATHAM LINES. - On Wednesday the prisoner, Robert Alexander Burton, who stands charged, on his own admission, with the murder of Thomas Frederick Houghton, on the 23rd inst., on Chatham Lines, underwent a final examination before the county bench of magistrates, at Rochester. He was then fully committed to take his trial for wilful murder at the next assizes." Refer to a book called 'Kent Murders' by Alan Bignell for Robert's execution in 1863 for murder, having confessed; much of the trial turned on the question of insanity. As mentioned before, there are 266 newspaper articles in findmypast under the name of Robert Alexander Burton. Correspondence between Robert and his father is printed in these extensive newspaper articles, in which he explains his crime and asks for forgiveness of his father, while still making a rather pointed remark "My dear father, I hope you and my brother James will from this timeforward take the advice of a dying son. Do not go any longer in sin and drunkenness, for the fruits of sin is death, which you may see from your own son." (ref Maidstone Telegraph 18 Apr 1863). His father did write to forgive him. Robert was executed on 11 Apr 1863 at Maidstone Prison. His death was reg Jun qtr 1863 at Maidstone dist (ref FreeBMD). "EXECUTION AT MAIDSTONE. - The last sentence of the law was carried into effect on Saturday morning at twelve o'clock, in front of the County Gaol at Maidstone, upon Robert Alexander Burton, a lad 20 years of age, who was convicted at the late spring assizes for the county of Kent of the murder, under very cruel and aggravated circumstances, of a little boy nine years of age, by stabbing him in the neck with a knife. For a long time he exhibited a great deal of bravado, but latterly his spirits gave way, and he expressed sorrow for his crime." (Liverpool Daily Post 13 April 1863 which demonstrates a degree of nonchalance, immediately following this paragraph by one which states that Croquet for the Parlour is the leading indoor game ..) |
