Marriage 9 Apr 1835 at Shoreditch St Leonards of William Sampson to Elizabeth SAMPSON; although the marriage certificate states that they were bachelor and spinster, she was formerly Elizabeth SMITH and had been married to William's brother Thomas Sampson who had died in 1833; witnesses were John Sampson & Maria Sampson, who might be their brother and sister in law (ref Ancestry London CofE Marriages image). She was first married in 1822. She was born c1801 with broad range from 1841 census, or c1797 (ref 1851 census) or c1791 (from death certificate). Dau Mary Elizabeth baptised 1835 when he was at Half Moon Crescent, Warehouseman; son William James baptised 1837 when he was also at Half Moon Crescent, Warehouseman; the same son William buried 13 Sep 1840 when he was at Half Moon Crescent; Henry Peter was the last child with Mary Loxton, born 16 Sep 1840. So within a week, there was a death and a new child. Son Henry baptised 1840 when he was at Half Moon Crescent, Light Porter.

Mary presumably died between 16 Sep 1840 and the census in 1841, death record not found in London of an appropriate age.

There appear to be 2 1841 census records for Peter Sampson, perhaps one at his home and one at his business. Half Moon Crescent and Kingsland Road (Wharf Rise) are about 2 miles apart.

Joseph's death reg not definitely found. The one in 1897 at Cambridge may be the Joseph Sampson in the 1891 census said to be born at Holywell, Flint.

In the Will of Thomas, signed 7 Apr 1854 and available in full on Ancestry, the executors are named as William Sampson (son) and Peter Sampson (cousin and brother-in-law, Coffee House keeper, see above). It is an extensive document which mainly describes the future management of Thomas's financial assets. He states that the first four children had already been provided for; he specifies his wife to benefit prior to her death or future marriage, and makes provision for his remaining four underage children to be looked after by the named executors as guardians. Note that he does not mention Elizabeth who must therefore be Eleanor's daughter separately.
