Little ~ Third Generation

Issue of James Little and Frances Anson
1.   Margaret ANSON
Also known as Margaret Little, at her marriage. Perhaps she was always known as Little.
Bap 19 Feb 1809 at Wetheral, Cumberland, England.
"Margaret, illegitimate daughter of James Little late of Aglionby, servant, and of Francis Anson of Cumwhinton, bap 19 Feb 1809." (ref Wetheral parish records)

The assumption is made that Margaret was the mother, with William Foster, of Sarah Little who was bap 1829 and was in the 1841 census with Margaret's father, James.

It is confirmed that it was this Margaret who married as Margaret Little to John Robinson, by the mention in the will of Frances Little (Robert's daughter) leaving money to Sydney Gordon Robinson, the son of her cousin, Isaac Robinson.
Margaret (Margaret Little) married 26 Sep 1833 at Wetheral to John ROBINSON (ref FamilySearch). John was born c1804 at Thursby (ref census).

"John, son of James Little of Cumwhinton, labourer, and of Frances his wife, late Anson, bap 11 Oct 1812." (ref Wetheral parish records).
In 1861 John gave his birth place as Cumwinton, Cumberland, and his death cert has Cumquinton.

Married 23 Sep 1838 at Torpenhow to Mary GRAVE, bap 31 Mar 1818 in Allhallows, Cumberland, England, in the district of Baggrow, Cumberland (ref 1851 census and son Robert's BC).
The marriage was reg Sep qtr 1838 in Wigton district, Cumberland (ref FreeBMD). Refer to the marriage certificate. Mary was the daughter of William Grave, farmer and Mary Huder. She was of minor age and the marriage was by banns.
SEE GRAVE FAMILY TREE.

John was known as a husbandman of Blennerhasset in 1839 at baptism of son William. The second son James was born in Sep 1840 at Blennerhasset.
Unable to find family record in 1841 English census.

Definitely moved to Liverpool, Lancashire, by 1 Jan 1843 based on birth of daughter Mary.
The birth order of the children is not clear and the names are based on other records.
Daughter Mary was born 1 Jan 1843 and Frances was born 14 Dec 1844 at 6 Kitchen Street (John was a Porter) which was a block away from the waterfront. In Sep 1846 they were living at 9 Mulberry St which was further away from the water and a much nicer area. By Jan 1849 (birth of Robert), John (described as a Warehouseman) and family had moved to 5 Mulberry Street Liverpool.

On 21 Jul 1851 John was a witness to the marriage of his sister Rachael.

John's obituary gives details about his time in Liverpool when he joined the Wesleyan Methodist church.
"Mr. John Little was born in Cumquinton, in the county of Cumberland, in the year 1811 [or 1812]. His life as a young man was upright and moral, but it was not until he was twenty-seven or twenty-eight years of age that he found peace with God. After a severe spiritual conflict, extending over 6 months, he came fully into the light of God's favour. This was in Liverpool, under the Wesleyan ministry. ... Mr. Little arrived in Victoria in 1851, spending the first twelve months of his colonial life in Geelong. [He had a shop there until at least 1859.] Thence he removed to Ballarat, which became, with one or two intervals of absence, his residence until his death in February last. Like most comers from the old country at that time, he became a gold-digger, in which pursuit he was fairly successful." [He made a fortune somehow.] (See his Obituary)

They emigrated to Victoria at the end of 1851. It is virtually certain that they travelled as unassisted migrants on the "Eagle" which left Liverpool on 8 Sep 1851 and arrived Melbourne 24 Dec 1851. John and Mary Little are listed as passengers but the children (William and Mary Jane) are not listed (see Argus Passenger Index 1846-1851 on microfiche).

When John died he left a very large estate, so it is reasonable to assume that he was successful on the goldfields. One example is in the Geelong Advertiser and Intelligencer of 27th September 1852 in the Return of Gold escorted from Ballarat to Geelong, September 25th. Among others, John Little, 60 ozs 4 dwts. 1 Troy oz = 20 pennyweight or dwt. The Troy ounce is about 10 per cent heavier than the avoirdupoise ounce. One estimate on the internet is that 1 oz would be worth 3 pounds 17 shillings and 10 pence (UK currency). Reported on 15th Oct 1852 in the Post Office Letter List in the same paper was "Little, John 3".

In Jan 1854 the First Geelong Dictionary and Almanac had an entry for J. Little, stationer, Malop-street, north side, on the east corner of Market Square, between, on the one side, Lord Nelson Hotel, Builders Arms Hotel and Freemasons Hotel, and on the other side, Market Square, Dalgety and the Geelong Advertiser building.

In the 1856 directory of Geelong, the listing appears (at the same place) for Mrs Little, Stationer etc next to Yarra Street (on the north-east corner,
see map.) It is possible that John was already working at Ballarat.

In Jan 1859 John was a Stationer at Geelong and they lived at Moorabool Street Geelong. The record of children on Robert Henry's BC was: William 20. James D. Mary D. Fanny D. Robert D. 3 D. John Benjamin 5 1/2. Robert Henry D. The informant was William who would have known all of the children.

The family spent some time in Geelong and then moved to Ballarat.

"BALLARAT YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION. - A Soiree in connection with the above association, will be held in the Baptist Chapel, Dawson street, (Rev. W.Sutton's), on Tuesday, 30th April, 1861. Tea on the table at six p.m. precisely. After tea the chair will be taken by the president, and addresses will be delivered on various subjects by members of the association and others. Tickets can be obtained from Messrs Vale, Sturt street; Birtchnell, Mechanics' Institute Reserve; J. H. Hammond, Main road; Wm. Hardie, Armstrong street; A. Kay, Raglan street; W. Chapple, confectioner, Eyre street; J. Little, fancy bazaar, Armstrong street; and of the secretaries and members of committee. Single tickets, 2s 6d; double ticket, admitting a lady and gentleman, 4s. Robert M. Walker, Frrederick Stocks, Hon. Secs." (ref Trove, The Star, Ballarat, Mon 29 Apr 1861; this article provides a link between the Chapple and Little families; William Chapple's son Frederick Joseph married John Little's granddaughter Fanny Beatrice in 1910).

In May 1861 John was a Storekeeper at Ballaarat East. The record of children on Ada's BC was: one living (William), eleven deceased. The informant was John. The newspaper report of the birth lists him as a stationer.

In Oct 1862 also John was a Storekeeper at Ballaarat East. The record of children on Jessie's BC was: William 23. James decd. Mary decd. Robert decd. Mary decd. Mary decd. John decd. Mary decd. Mary deceased. Francis deceased. Ada 1 1/2.

On 24 Jan 1863 John and Mary were living at Bridge street (death of daughter Jessie).
In 1869 John was listed in the Post Office Directory of Ballarat as John Little, toydealer, Bridge Street.

Mary died 29 Dec 1882 at Clarendon St, Ballarat (Vic reg 10764), and was buried on 31 Dec 1882 at Ballarat Old Cemetery (AN/8/1).
The record of children on her DC was: Issue. William 44. James decd. Mary Jane decd. John decd. Robert decd. Mary decd. John Benjamin decd. Jessie decd. Ada 21 years. No will/probate was found.

John died 26 Feb 1890 at Lyons Street, Ballarat, Victoria, Australia (ref his death cert, Vic reg 375). (His obituary has 27 Feb).
The cemetery record has "Lyons St Ballarat, Gentleman". He was buried on 28 Feb 1890 in the Ballarat Old Cemetery (AN/8/1).

John left an extraordinarily large estate valued at six thousand five hundred and seventeen pounds nineteen shillings and one penny. This was mainly in the form of four valuable properties in central Ballarat with shops and dwellings on them. This money was bequeathed to his only living children William and Ada.

The names of the various children are derived from the certificates that have been obtained. Unfortunately as non-conformists the baptism records of the children apart from William in 1839, Mary in 1843 and Frances in 1845 have not been found.

Using the surname of each mother in the GRO, all the births mentioned in the various death certificates have been sorted out with the exception of two babies named Mary Little said to have been born in Liverpool between 1844 and 1849. I have omitted these in the following list of childen.

John Borrow. Age 40. Cinder Burner. Born Northumberland.
Ann Borrow. Age 35. Born Northumberland.
Jane Borrow. Age 11. Born Northumberland.
Edward Borrow. Age 3. Born Northumberland.

Married Jane BORROW c1849 at Gretna Green, Scotland (ref his DC). Jane was born 1829, died 1916. Jane was presumably 20. Many runaway marriages were performed at Gretna Green. These began in 1753 when an Act of Parliament was passed in England, which stated that if both parties to a marriage were not at least 21 years old, then consent to the marriage had to be given by the parents. This Act did not apply in Scotland where it was possible for boys to get married at 14 and girls at 12 years old with or without parental consent. Jane came from a large family of the name of BORROW in Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Her parents were John and Ann Borrow. Jane had a brother Edward and a sister Ann. Jane was baptised 25 Dec 1829 at Presbyterian-NC, Haltwhistle. Edward was born 24 Mar 1838 and bap 30 Mar 1838 at the same place, and Ann was born 27 Oct 1841 and bap 29 Oct 1841 at the same place (ref IGI). There was a Tamar Borrow (a family name) bc. 1862 living in Melbourne and probably connected to the family, who was dau of George Borrow and Mary Mossop; Tamar died Balaclava in 1947 (Vic reg 4990) with a stated age of 85; she was born in 1862 in Victoria, and her father George was probably the one baptised 18 May 1836 at Haltwhistle, son of James and Ann Borrow, and married to Mary Mossop in 1855 in Victoria.

The Buninyong Cemetery transcriptions have: Little, Jane, died 1916, born 1829, mother of Robert d. 2.5.1929 and Frances d. 26.9.1943. They also list Jane buried 18 Apr 1916 age 87. No will/probate for Jane was found.

Robert died July 1916 at Buninyong, buried at Buninyong Cemetery (Church of England), Victoria, Australia on 22nd July 1916 (ref DC, Vic reg 9028). No will/probate was found.
"OBITUARY. Mr Robert Little, sen., one of the oldest residents of the Buninyong district, passed away at Buninyong yesterday. Mr Little came to Victoria 35 years ago, and followed farming pursuits with considerable success. During the past 10 years he had not taken any active part in the affairs of the farm, being content to leave the management to his sons, Messrs R. and E. Little. The deceased (our Buninyong correspondent writes) was a keen judge of draught horses, and also a good judge of shorthorn cattle. He was born in Cumberland, England, and was a fine type of the English yeoman. He was a charitable man, always responding in a prompt manner to any deserving cause. His wife predeceased him some three months ago. Although 94 years of age, he expressed a strong desire to live until Great Britain had crushed her enemies. The funeral takes place on Saturday."
