However he was found unfit due to flat feet (left especially). He was discharged from the regiment on 16 Nov 1874. He was seen in 1875 at work in the Clearance House, Euston Road, earning 30/- a week as a Bricklayer (his father's occupation). It was said in 1876 he had joined the Royal Navy and gone on a ship to Australia.
