Ref The Argus Sat 31 Jan 1874 for a curious incident: "The Geelong Advertiser describes the lure by an angler of a huge stingaree at Geelong railway pier :- "The line belonged to a young man named Theodore Shade who was fishing on the wharf, and when an enormous weight had become fast to the hook, not having sufficient strength to haul it up, he called on some of his companions, who were also angling at the same time on the pier, to lend him a helping hand. After some time had elapsed the prize was brought, splashing and writhing, belly upmost, to the top of the water, and was at once pronounced to be a stingaree...(etc)" "
