Clara died 6 Aug 1922 at Heywood age 71 and is buried with her father in law and son.

It appears that he was brought up by his grandparents at the workhouse, at which they were Master and Matron.

"STARCROSS FUNERAL. THE LATE Mr. JAMES CROOK.
The passing of a very old inhabitant of Starcross, Mr. James Crook, who has been ill for a considerable time, is much regretted. He was born at Witheridge and was the younger son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Crook. He came to Starcross as a boy and has lived in the parish ever since. Unassuming but respected by all, he was in the employ of the late Mr. F. Palfrey and Sons for over 27 years.
He was laid to rest on Monday in St. Paul's churchyard. The Vicar (the Rev. A. Rosser) officiated. Mr. Chas. Morris was at the organ and played appropriate music during the assembly of the congregation and the "Dead March" from "Saul" as the cortege left the church. The coffin was of unpolished elm with brass fittings and bore the inscription:- "James Crook, died Nov. 2nd, 1933, aged 80 years."
During the service the hymn "Peace, perfect peace" was sung. The mourners were the widow, Mrs. J. Stokes, Exeter, Mrs. D. Breeze, London, Mr. J. Serle, Masters Jack and Dennis Stokes, Exeter (grandsons); Mrs. Amos Baker. Mr. and Mrs. Isted (London) were unable to attend through indisposition. ..." Extract from the Exeter Flying Post, 6 Jun 1891: 'THE BOATING FATALITY AT STARCROSS. INQUEST. On Thursday Mr. H. W. Gould, deputy coroner, held an inquiry at the Courtenay Arms, Starcross, into the circumstances touching the death of George Searle, a boatman, who was recently drowned. George Searle, a waterman, of Starcross, identified the body viewed by the jury as that of his son, George Henry Searle, who was a boatman and was 20 years of age. Deceased was a very good waterman, but could not swim. - Robert Woodgates, of Teignmouth, said on Tuesday last at about 6.30 p.m., he was fishing in the river, when he discovered the body of the deceased floating in the water. - Mr. Edgar Lipscombe, surgeon, of Starcross, gave evidence as to examining the body of the deceased. He found it very decomposed, and presented the usual appearance of death from drowning. - The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death from drowning." '

Percival's publications included an edition, with notes, of "A Song to David and Other Poems" by the eighteenth century English poet, Christopher Smart; "A Bibliography of Australasian Poetry and Verse: Australia and New Zealand"; "An Australasian Anthology" (with 'Furnley Maurice' and R H Croll); "Dictionary of Australian Biography" and "A Primer of Collecting". "Rare books left to Public Library. BOOKS which the Public Library has sought for years are included in a bequest to it by the late Percival Serle. A Public Library official said yesterday Mr. Serle had one of Australia's finest collections of works by little-known poets. The 200 books bequeathed to the Library include early editions of works by Marcus Clarke and Henry Kendall. There is also a first edition of "The Rural Muse" by John Clare. Mr. Serle also bequeathed to the Library his collection of biographical records, and a framed letter written by Sir Walter Scott. To the National Gallery Mr. Serle left his collection of wood engravings and black and white illustrations. He also left 150 volumes to the Melbourne University Library. Other small legacies will benefit the Historical Society of Victoria, the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, Opportunity Clubs for Girls and Boys, and the Australian Literary Fund. Mr. Serle, who died on December 16, was a member of the Bread and Cheese Club, and was an ardent collector of Australiana. His widow and children are the chief beneficiaries in his 27,774 will." His obituary from The Argus of 15 May 1945 is as follows:
"Mr Edwin Hamilton Serle, solicitor, who died on Saturday at the age of 69, was well-known in his youth as an amateur runner of ability. He was a former chairman of the council of the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association. He served in the last war as director of intelligence with the rank of major, and was awarded the OBE. As a result of illness he retired to Kinglake three years ago."
