Susan died 1894 at Geelong, Victoria, Australia, aged 76, dau of John Le Brun and Susan Rose (Vic reg 1973). The age in the death record differs from her age in the newspaper record, 74, but this is not surprising given the variation in her birth year throughout the census records.

Thomas Livesgue. Son in Law. Widower. Age 18. Porter. Born Middlesex Bethnal Green. [presumably not a widower]

Marr reg Dec qtr 1853 at Bethnal Green dist of Thomas James Levesque to Caroline HOLLAND (ref FreeBMD). The marriage was 25 Dec 1853 at St Andrew, Bethnal Green; Thomas was full age, bachelor, Warehouseman, of No 2 Chesters (?) St, son of John Levesque, Silk Weaver; Caroline was full age, spinster, same address, dau of WIlliam Holland, Shoe Maker; witnesses William Jackson, William Hallam (ref Ancestry London Marriages). According to her death, Caroline was born c1834; her baptism not found.

No further records have been found in the name of Levesque apart from baptisms of children in 1855, 1862 and 1873 and the death of the first child in 1862.
Not found in 1861 census either as Levesque or Jackson, to which they changed their name.

Thomas was in trouble with the law in 1864.
"EXTENSIVE SEIZURE OF COUNTERFEIT COIN. At Worship-street, Robert Wilson, 34, described as a printer in Luscene-court, Broad-street, Bloomsbury, and Thomas Levesque, 32, a beer-shop keeper, in Essex-street, Hoxton, were charged with being in unlawful possession of 29 half-crowns, 50 florins, and 65 shillings, all of which are spurious, and with intending to circulate the same well knowing them to be so. Mr. Bellamy prosecuted for the Mint authorities. Mr. Beard defended Levesque and Mr. G. Lewis, of Ely-place, appeared for Wilson. On the 1st inst., at eleven o'clock in the morning, Mr. James Brannan, the well-known agent to the Mint in such proceedings, went, accompanied by Inspectors Webster, N division; Brannan, F division, Fyfe, G division; and Sergeants Elliot and Leather, of the same, to the house of Levesque. Wilson was standing at the bar. The younger Mr. Brennan instantly seized him; the others ran upstairs, and on Wilson being subsequently taken there he resisted violently, making a desparate kick at the agent, which he declared was unintentional, as he had meant it for Leather, who he declared was putting some bad coin into his pocket. He succeeded in severly injuring the sergeant by kicking him on one of his knees while forcing from his pockets two paper parcels, a third being found on the floor, each of which contained ten counterfeit shillings. Sergeant Elliot was also injured by kicks while holding him so that the personal search might be effected. Meanwhile Inspector Fyfe, in treading upon a raised stage, used apparently as a concert platform, upset a form, beneath which, on a secret shelf, were other packages containing the half-crowns, florins, &c., mentioned. Wilson declared he had never in his life had a bad piece of money knowingly in his hand, and he gave a false address. Mr. Beard contended that there was not the slightest evidence against his client, and Mr. Elliot directed his discharge. Mr. Lewis reserved the defence for Wilson, who was forthwith fully committed for trial at the Old Bailey, and now a charge of having a quantity of tobacco, without giving a reasonable account of the same, was brought against Levesque. Mr. Beard complained that this proceeding was an afterclap. The police well knew at the time the first charge was made that the tobacco was on the premises. He could, however, by evidence, satisfy the magistrate of its having been lawfully obtained, the only fact against the shopkeeper being that he had assered it had been in his place a week, whereas it had been there only an hour or so when found by Inspector Webster. After some further evidence a remand was ordered in this case." (ref British Newspaper Archive Herts Guardian, Agricultural Journal, and General Advertiser - Sat 15 October 1864)

Thomas and Caroline changed their name to Jackson (perhaps because of the previous issue?), that of Thomas's stepfather, even though he was 17 when his mother remarried. This is proved in the marriage of their daughter Elizabeth Caroline, with both names being given.

    John LEVESQUE

John was born c1818 (according to his death) or c1820 (according to Old Bailey). No record has been found of a baptism at this time. He was very probably a son of John Levesque and Margaret Brennand, see previous generation; the date and place fit and there is no other John in the family; also, the other baptisms are dispersed to different parishes so they may well have missed one for their eldest son.

He was living in London when he was apprehended and tried for stealing from No. 7 Orange-row, Islington, on the 28 Aug 1833, 69 handkerchiefs, value 1 pound 17 shillings. He was found guilty and sentenced to transportation for seven years, his stated age being 13. He had previously been in trouble with the law.
"NEW COURT. William Newton and Joseph [sic] Levesque, two young boys, were indicted for stealing, on the 8th August last, 59 cotton handkerchiefs and 10 silk ones, value 1 pound 7 shillings, the property of Mr. Loftus, a linen draper in Islington. They were seen to take them by the prosecutor's shopman, who pursued them, and caught them with the property in their possession. Levesque has before been tried for felony.
The Common Sergeant said it would be better that both should be sent to some of the ships and learn a trade; they were accordingly marked for transportation."
(ref British Newspaper Archive, Public Ledger and Daily Advertiser, Tue 10 Sep 1833)

On 7 Mar 1834 John departed on the convict ship 'Susan' for New South Wales, Australia, arriving 17 Jul 1834. He was assigned to Wm Innes at the Hunter River. In 1837 he was assigned to Beresford Hudson at Paterson on the Hunter River as a servant.

On 14 Aug 1841 John was given his Certificate of Freedom in New South Wales.

A possible relation, William Levesque of Hunter River, is listed in the Government Gazette of Fri Dec 19, 1851, General Post Office, Sydney, in the list of unclaimed letters (ref Trove). This William has not been identified.

John married in 1862 to Mary McDOWELL at Maitland, NSW (ref Ancestry, Australian Marriage Index, registration number 1862/2175, with Mary MacD?) The marriage was 12 Feb 1862 at St Stephen's Manse, East Maitland; Church of Scotland; John was a bachelor, occupation Store Keeper, usual residence West Maitland, birthplace, age and parents not listed; Mary was a spinster, usual residence West Maitland, birthplace, occupation, age and parents not listed; witnesses were Fanny Ann Hewson, Alexander Watt; the minister was William Purves; the bride signed with her mark (ref marriage transcription from NSW records).

Mary was born about 1822 at Liverpool, Lancashire, England (ref her death).
John had property at Maitland, and there is a reference in 1872 to him as an Omnibus Proprietor.

Mary died on 9 Jul 1892 at Maitland West, NSW.
"DEATH OF AN OLD MAITLAND RESIDENT - On Saturday there died at the residence of her husband in West Maitland Mrs Levesque, at the age of 70 years. She was a native of Liverpool, England, and had lived 58 years in Maitland. Mrs Levesque's illness was a short one; she had a slight attack of influenza, and subsequently caught a chill which proved fatal." (ref Trove, Maitland Mercury and Hunter River General Advertiser Tues 12 Jul 1892).
She was buried on 10 Jul 1892 at Campbells Hill Cemetery.

John died 3 days after her, on the 12 Jul 1892.
Death reg of John Levesque 1892 at Maitland East, New South Wales (ref Ancestry Australian Death Index 1892/7907).

The verdict of the inquest held at Maitland on 13 July 1892 was that John Levesque aged 74 died of natural causes to wit heart disease; cash or property possessed by the deceased consisted of house and lands, and some money in Bank of Australasia, amounts not known (ref Ancestry Australian Registers of Coroners' Inquests)

John was buried on 13 Jul 1892 at Campbells Hill Cemetery.
Mary and John both left a Will and gave everything to the St Mary's Church, Maitland.
" NEW WINDOWS-ST. MARY'S CHURCH.-On Sunday last the new windows which have been placed in St. Mary's Church were seen for the first time, having been erected during the previous week. They were manufactured by Ashwin and Co., of Pitt-street, Sydney, and the figures and painting have been admirably executed, reflecting to the memory of the late Mr. and Mrs John Levesque, and each window consists of two lights or pictures. The first light in the Levesque window represents the history recorded in Acts iv, 34 35, " As many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them and brought the prices of the things sold and laid them down at the Apostles' feet," referring of course to the munificent bequests left by the deceased to various pious and charitable purposes. Underneath are written the words " In Memoriam, John and Mary Levesque, great benefactors of this Church, both died July, 1892." (ref Trove, The Maitland Mercury April 29 1893)
