Introduction
Edwards ~ First Generation

1.   Thomas EDWARDS
Married Mary, surname unknown.

A great deal of investigation has been done of the parish records of Presteigne, Radnorshire, Wales which are held by the LDS but are not yet indexed in any form in FamilySearch.

The relevant tapes, #992389, #1040019 and #1040020, have been examined by me (LS) closely during 2013. Many of the marriages, baptisms and burials relating to the Edwards family have been extracted.
The list is attached here. Some periods of time are very unclear particularly in the early centuries.

Baptisms of James and William in 1767 and 1773, sons of Thomas and Mary Edwards, coincide so closely with the calculated dates of birth of these two from other evidence, that it is almost certain that these are a correct match. James and William had a sister Margaret baptised in 1770 so she has been put in as well.

There is a possible marriage of Thomas Edwards to a Mary which occurred on 20 Apr 1754, to Mary Hunt in the presence of John Hunt. This may be too early to be the correct marriage.

Unfortunately the baptism of John Stuart Edwards does not appear in the records in Presteigne. There is a John baptised in 1773 (son of John and Ann) but this seems to be too early. Further investigation need to be made into the ownership or tenantry of Broadheath prior to John Stuart Edwards.

The tree for John Stuart Edwards has been retained but there is a possibility that they were not brothers but simply neighbours, especially as both James and William went to London, while John Stuart remained as a Gentleman Farmer in Presteigne. John probably had a sister Catherine (also not found in the baptisms) for whose marriage in 1808 John Stuart and his bride-to-be were the witnesses.
