Parmenter was born in Poundstock parish, Cornwall, England June 28, 1804 [gravestone is correct with 22 June]. His early years were spent upon his father's farm by the seaside. Being of a delicate constitution and, according to his parent's judgement, not strong enough to endure the tolls of country life, he was apprenticed to a tailor. After learning his trade and spending a year or more in London, as was the custom in those days, "to finish", he opened a small store at Bummerleys, with tailor shop overhead. In due course of time he married and the young couple spent a busy, happy life till in 1831 they determined to brave the dangers of the deep and seek their fortune in the new world. They settled in the new town of Honesdale, PA. There were eight children born to the marriage between 1830 and 1852. In 1854 they moved to a farm near Mt Vernon, Ohio. About this time he and his brother Sampson changed their surname from Parminter to Parmenter. In 1875 William and his wife gave up farming and moved to Howard, Ohio. He was a very devout man and for many years was a lay evangelist. " He was buried at Mound View Cemetery, Mouth Vernon, Section 13, Lot 22, Plot 1. Allin GRIGG Bap 22 Sep 1826 at Kilkhampton, Cornwall (ref IGI & FMP and Kilkhampton parish register) as John Allin Grigg. The baptism record clearly says 'John Allin' but I assume this is an error, unless there was a twin Richard who was not listed in the baptism register. Richard died early February 1836. The cemetery memorial stone is shown in a photo attached. The date is obscure. It reads: "Erected in Memory of Richard Allin Grigg Son of John and Susanna Grigg of this Town who departed this Life the ? Day of February in the year of our Lord 1836 in the 10 year of his Age" together with some other verses. Richard was buried 9 Feb 1836 at Kilkhampton; age 9; residence Churchtown (ref Cornwal OPC). |
