    CONNECTION NOT PROVED
    John CHAPPLE

There is uncertainty about who this John Chapple (the father of Clement and following siblings) was. He has not yet been connected to the tree above though he certainly lived in the same area. Further work is needed to look at other possible baptisms.

He has previously been given as the son of Thomas (see above), but this is unlikely, both from the fact that John was not mentioned in the Will of Ambrose in 1650 (previously assumed to be his uncle) which did specify the 4 nieces, and that Thomas is now believed to have died in 1643, rather early for this John to have been born, given the dates of his wife and children.

There is a bap 6 Feb 1644/45 at Alphington, Devon of a John Chappell, "son of Richard Chappell". Due to the fact there there is no other occurrence of a suitable Richard Chappell in Alphington or surrounds, this has been taken in many Ancestry Public Trees to be an error for "son of Thomas Chappell" as it follows the pattern of dates. On the other hand, if the burial of a Thomas Chappell on 20 Oct 1643 refers to his supposed father then this is not possible.

Some Ancestry Public Trees refer to his marriage 25 Mar 1669 at Alphington to Elizabeth KINGE and that she was born 1645 in Alphington and died 1724. No supporting evidence has yet been given for this and the marriage is not in the Alphington records. Some of the dates look unlikely, eg the marriage date and the age at which Elizabeth would have had her children. None of the baptisms of the children mention the name of the mother.

There is a presumed burial of John Chapell 26 Apr 1724 at Alphington, Devon (ref Alphington records on tape 916799 at LDS) but this might refer to the one who was married to Joan WILLS. There is another possible marriage which is John Chapell to Joan WILLS on 28 Jun 1682 at Saint Thomas The Apostle, Exeter, Devon (ref FamilySearch). There is a burial 7 May 1729 at Alphington of Joan Chaple, "w. of John Chaple" (ref Alphington records on tape 916799 at LDS).

It is most likely that John married 15 May 1679 at Templeton (near Tiverton), Devon to Margery LAND, both of Tiverton, Devon (ref fmp); Margarey [stet] was bap 20 Sep 1658 at Tiverton St Peter, dau of William Land of Brook, legitimate (ref fmp). Another record in Ancestry and FamilySearch gives her birth in Oct 1658 at Cruwys-Morchard which is nearby, but the birth month is presumably wrong and the original record is not shown. The first two children, Clement and John, were baptised at Tiverton, and the remaining at Alphington; Clement is shown to have moved from Tiverton to Alphington which makes this family grouping likely.

FROM WHOM FREDERICK SHADE IS DESCENDED.
