3.   Henry BAGWELL
Bap 29 Oct 1589 at Saint Petrock, Exeter, Devon, son of David Bagwell (ref FamilySearch C05050-1).
Henry lived 1589 to 1663. Many websites says that he died Northampton Virginia USA in 1663.

"He was an ancient Planter who came to Jamestown, Virginia in 1610, after being shipwrecked on the Seaventure in 1609" (ref a descendant, David Dixon, 2013)
The Sea Venture (or Seaventure) sailed as part of a flotilla of nine ships whose intended destination was Jamestown, Virginia. The ship departed 2 Jun 1609 and was wrecked between two reefs off the shores of Bermuda on 18 Jul 1609. Ref online page in www.geni.com/projects.
David continues (in 2013) :"The best single compilation I have seen however is in a book I just purchased.  I visited Jamestown within the past month, and bought a book entitled "Virginia Immigrants and Adventurers 1607 - 1635", by Martha W. McCartney 2007.  This has sketches on several thousand early settlers.  On page 99 is states as to Henry: "Henry Bagwell, an ancient planter, was shipwrecked in Bermunda with Sir Thomas Gates and Sir George Somers in 1609.  He reached Virginia in 1610 on the Deliverance, which had been fashioned from Bermuda's native cedar wood.  (other sources indicate the ship was built from timbers salvaged from the wrecked Seaventure - my note)  On February 16, 1624 Henry was living at West and Shriley Hundred: he was still there on January 22, 1625, heading a household with his parnter, Simon (Symon) Sturgis (Turgis).  Henry Bagwell was then 35 years old.  The two men had an ample supply of stored food and defensive weaponry and some livestock.  When a list of patented land was sent back to England in May 1625, Henry Bagwell was credited with 50 acres within the corporation of Charles City.  On December 22, 1628 the General Court ordered him to pay the remainder of his debt to Hugh Hawkridge.  Bagwell moved to the Easter Shore and in 1630 and 1632 served as a burgess for Accomac.  By 1637 he had married Alice, the widow of Benjamin Stratton.  Henry Bagwell continued to play an active role in Public life and became Clerk of the local Court.  He was still alive in April 1645."  The volume then cites various sources for the information.

The Will of his grandmother Thomazine Chappell in 1617 specifies the following details:
"
Item. I give unto six sonnes and daughters of my daughter Joane Parr viz unto everie one of them fortie shillings."
Since he was in Jamestown, Virginia at this time, it might have been hard to give him this bequest.

There is a great deal of information about the Bagwell family available on the internet. A Chapple researcher, David D. Dixon, descends thus: Henry Bagwell (1589) married Alice Hawkins; Thomas Bagwell (1642-1690) married Anne Stockley; Perry Leatherbury (1664-1709) married Comfort Bagwell; Job Barker (1690-1749) married Ann Leatherbury; Thomas Newport married 1733 to Ann Barker; Jess Newport (c1734) married Elizabeth Long; Thomas Newport (1759-1825) married Mary Evans; John Banta (1792-1860) married Hanna Newport; Aaron Beckner (1810-1892) married Rachel Banta; John P. Morris (1842-1937) married Hanna Beckner; Joseph Rees (1868-1943) married Lorannah Morris; Lester Dixon (1892-1973) married Ruby Rees. These are David Dixon's grandparents.

The Will of her grandmother Thomazine Chappell in 1617 specifies the following details:
"
Item. I give unto six sonnes and daughters of my daughter Joane Parr viz unto everie one of them fortie shillings."

Evidence for her existence is as follows (ref D.Dixon 2013):
"From "The Western Antiquary" of June of 1883 that records of the Parr family of Exeter: From the Probate Court of Exeter - On the 9th of May 1640. Administration of the effects of Johane Parr of St. Paul's Exeter, widow deceased, intestate, Granted to her daughter Dorothye Bagwell of the City of Exter, spinster, no inventory."

Issue of Nicholas Chapple and Thomasin Parre
1.   Thomas CHAPPLE
Thomas is stated in Ancestry Public Trees to be born and baptised 1602 in Alphington, Devon, however the published baptism records do not start till 1603 so this may be a guess.

The Will of his grandmother Thomazine Chappell in 1617 specifies the following details:
"
I give unto seven sonnes and daughters of my sonne Nicholas Chappell viz unto everie one of them fortie shillings. ...
I give unto my daughter in law Thomazine Chappell fortie shillings of lawful money of England. I give unto her oldest sonne Thomas Chappell my best stone cupp covered with silver gilt and unto her oldest daughter Christian Chappell I give a white silver goblet.

The Will of his father Nicholas in 1620/21 names the following among others:
" Wife Thomazine 4 sons Thos. Ambrose, Nicholas and John ".

Listed on many Ancestry Public Trees as married c1631 at Alphington but this is not listed in the published Alphington records. Married to Mary, surname unknown. In one of the children's baptisms she is Marie but mostly is Mary, in particular in the will of Ambrose Chappell (see below). Most Ancestry Public Trees have her as Marie Michell (or occasionally Mitchell) but this is probably confusion with her second marriage, and the Will of her husband names her as Mary.

There is a burial of Thomas Chappell 20 Oct 1643 which is confirmed by the index to his Will in the Devon Wills Index; he was of Alphington, probate year 1643, "admon granted to Mary Chappell, his wife" (ref findmypast). The actual Will has not been located.

It appears that Mary remarried, to George MITCHELL of Alphington, by 2 Jul 1650, though this record is not found in FamilySearch or fmp.

The relevant portion of the Will of his brother Ambrose is as follows:
"WILL OF AMBROSE CHAPPELL
Date of Will: 2 July 1650
Proved: 11 Nov 1650
To Mary wife of George Mitchell of Alphington late wife of my brother Thomas Chappell decd. £20."

This eliminates a potential child JOHN CHAPPLE born 1645 at Alphington which formerly appeared here, and which appears in many trees online.
It also eliminates the descendancy of Frederick Shade from the published first 6 generations of this tree.

The Will of his father Nicholas in 1620/21 names the following among others:
" Wife Thomazine 4 sons Thos. Ambrose, Nicholas and John ".

The most likely marriage is on 6 Oct 1632 at Saint Gregory By Saint Paul, London, of Ambrose Chappell to Anne GOSLIN (ref FamilySearch M05426-1) since his Will gives his wife's name as Anne and he moved away from his home as a mariner.
No children found in FamilySearch.

Ambrose died late 1650, presumably in Lisbon, Portugal. There is a mention in Google books in 'Ships of the Royal Navy' page 205, as such: "JOHN AND MARY Hired, impressed at Lisbon 1650". There are several references to the 'St Andrew' in other books about the Royal Navy.

His Will is transcribed below and helps to resolve the marriages and families of his siblings.
