The Marriage Bond dated 30th Mar 1818 specifies that Richard Chapple, bachelor, Plumber and Glazier of the Parish of Walcot in the County of Somerset, and Jane Grigg, spinster of the same Parish, may lawfully solemnize marriage together, in accordance with certain conditions. The Marriage Bond also carries the name of Henry Richardson, Hairdresser, of the same Parish and County. The Marriage Licence dated the same day includes the information that both Richard and Jane were of the age twenty one years and upward.

Richard CHAPPLE and Jane GRIGG were married 31 Mar 1818 at the Chapel of St Mary in the Parish of Walcot in the County of Somerset (Queen Square, Bath), England. The Bishop's Transcript of the marriage has a blank for Jane's parish. The marriage was in the presence of James Shipp and Joseph Tucker. Some Australian records have her name as CRAIG, which was not the case, presumably a phonetic error by Australian clerks due to the family's southwest English accent. Jane was noted to be not born in Somerset (ref 1841 census). Jane Grigg was bap 1 Sep 1793 at Kilkhampton, Cornwall (ref IGI & FMP), dau of Charles Grigg and Elizabeth Cornish.

For three pictures and a description of St Mary's Chapel, Queen's Square, Bath, see the
photographs page.

Richard's occupation was variously referred to as plumber (in baptisms from 1819 to 1836 & in son William's death cert), painter and glazier (1826), and gentleman. In 1980 in Bath, Edwin Exon Chapple reported on a plaque stating that Richard Chapple had carried out the plumbing of the Francis Hotel, which is situated in Queen Square, Bath, and presumably the plaque was within or on the wall of the hotel; it is not known if it is still there.

Richard and Jane reported their address as No 2 Northampton St, Bath from on the baptisms from 1820 to 1828, and again 1834 and 1836; they gave it as No 3 Northampton St in 1829 and 1832. See the photo page for photographs of Northampton Street Bath, and 12 Rivers Street Bath, the later home of Jane, and also the Walcot Parish Church.

Migration of Richard and eldest son Charles to America
Richard and Charles migrated to America, arriving 26 Apr 1836, using the name 'ALLEN' as a surname. The journey would have been approximately 2 months long so they would have left in February 1836. The shipping records which have been found by John Chapple spell this as 'ALLAN' but there are other family references to Allen indicating that at least some of the children knew of his situation. The second name, Allen, was found in the 1852 marriage of the daughter Frances and in her death certificate, seeming to indicate that she was aware of his name change, and there is a possibility that her husband Edwin Exon visited the Chapple family in New York (Charles died in 1886) when he went there in 1888 & 1899 or 1901 (with thanks to researcher John Chapple 2013).

The "Spectator", New York, dated 28 April 1836, records the ship's name as COLCHIS and reports its departure date from Liverpool as 29th February 1836. This makes it a very long journey across the Atlantic, however the article apparently goes on to say "8th April, latitude 43º longitude 44º to 56º [ship] fell in with large fields of ice and was compelled to steer east [i.e. back towards UK] for 2 days to clear the ice". (Reference John Chapple 2014).

Situation of Jane in Bath, Somerset
Jane was evidently deserted leaving her with 8 living children, and a 9th on the way. Richard and Charles would just have arrived in New York when somebody advertised on her behalf in the Bath newspaper as follows.

Bath Chronicle & Weekly Gazette – Thursday 28th April 1836 – Page 3
"To the BENEVOLENT & CHARITABLE
It would be impossible to lay before the Public a more Distressing Case than that of JANE CHAPPLE, who is deserted by her Husband, leaving her with eight children. Since his absence, every article of furniture has been taken under an execution for debt; and had it not been for the kindness of the Landlord of the House, and a few friends, the Wife & Children must have appealed to the Parish for relief. This family never knew the want of necessaries before, but they are now plunged into the greatest misery and poverty by the desertion of their unfortunate parent; and to add to their grief there is no hope of his returning to them, as it is supposed he is gone to America. The Wife expects in a short time to increase her family with the ninth child, not one of whom is scarcely able to earn a shilling. Under these very deplorable circumstances, the benevolent and charitable are solicited to alleviate the sufferings of this forlorn woman and children.

If any other information is required, it may be known by applying to Howe & Son, No. 11, St James’s Street Square, who are authorized to receive further donations.

    NOT IDENTIFIED
1.   James CHAPPLE
Born c1781 (ref burial).
This James was previously identified in this tree as the son of James Chapple and Elizabeth Southard, above, bap 1772 at Alphington.
There is a family record written by his grandson Robert Henry James Chapple which identifies the birth and death dates of James and his wife Elizabeth, see below. It does not specify the surname GILES for Elizabeth, but the following marriage of a James Chapple to an Elizabeth in Exeter appears the only possible one.

There is still a mystery as to the use of the second name Southard which presumably comes further back in the tree of this James, not to be confused with the one just mentioned. The family record is unclear for previous generations.

Marriage 6 Jan 1803 at Saint Sidwell, Exeter, Devon of James Chapple to Elizabeth GILES (ref FamilySearch M05051-1). Bap of Elizth Giles 27 Dec 1781 at St Sidwell, Exeter, dau of Samuel Giles & Grace (ref Ancestry England Select Births & Christenings). She was dau of Samuel Giles & Grace Andrews.
