Introduction

Chapple ~ First Generation
John Clark Chapple c1819

    Parents unknown
1.   William CHAPPLE

We know from John Clark Chapple's marriage certificate that his father William Chapple was a miner. This gives sufficient information to locate this first generation.

On 20 Jun 1804 at St Mary Major, Exeter, Devon, William Chapple married Ann CLARKE; Banns of marriage between William Chapple of the Royal Miners Quartered in this parish and Ann Clarke of this parish spinster were published on 13th May, 20th May and 27th May 1804; William Chapple of the Royal Miners Quartered in this parish and Ann Clarke of this parish spinster were married in this church by Banns this 20th day of June in the year 1804; witnesses Charles Scanes (?) and Wm Portbury (ref fmp Devon Marriages images).

Unfortunately the rest of their children have not been located including John Clark Chapple who stated he was born in Exeter so perhaps some of the Exeter records have not been made available in findmypast or FamilySearch. Caroline's record is the only one that specifically gives 'miner' as occupation. The rest of the children are a best guess.

Possible burial of William Chapple 11 Dec 1825 at Exeter St David, Devon, aged 42 (i.e. born c1783), address Lower North Street (ref fmp Devon Burials image).

In 1847, Ann Chapple was put on trial in Devon for "Keeping a Disorderly House" and sentenced to 1 month imprisonment and sureties; her stated age was 63 (ref Ancestry).

Burial of Ann Chapple 12 Feb 1851 at Exeter St Mary Major, Devon, aged 60, address Rack Street (ref fmp Devon Burials image). [Ann had a history of reducing her age; if she married as young as 16 she was born by 1788 but using the 1847 trial age she was born c1784.]
