An article in the Edmonton Journal (Canada) on 3 Mar 2008 described Bessie as the oldest person in Alberta (Canada) and likely oldest Canadian, having celebrated her 111th birthday. The article gives her birth as March 2, 1897, her father being an actor and her mother a singer, and says that "she was named Bessie for an aunt who was shot to death by a jealous boyfriend as she took her afternoon tea". Attached is an account of the double murder (including her aunt Bessie Montagu Archdeacon, stage name Daisy Montagu) & suicide that took place in the streets of London and was reported in the New York Times on 22 Sep 1893. Bessie's father died when she was young (1904) and her mother put her two brothers in a boarding school and boarded a ship named Lake Manitoba to seek a better life with her daughter in Canada.
