William CAZALY Born c1809 in Middlesex (ref 1851 census). Ref 1841 census. Middlesex, England. Parish of St Marylebone. Address: Adam St, Marylebone. James Caraly. Age 30. Clerk. Born in Middlesex. Mary Latford. Age 20. Born in Middlesex. Mary Skter. (?) Age 30. Dress Maker. Born in Middlesex. (Note that it is curious that James was living in the house with Mary Latford. It is possible that Mary's name was Letford and she may have been the daughter of Ann Cazaly and Thomas Letford who married 25 Mar 1818 at St Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, ref IGI; they appear - though not proved because the name Cazaly is not given in the IGI records - to have had at least two children, John Thomas Letford born 30 Nov 1815, bap 7 Jun 1818 at Saint Luke, Chelsea, and Mary Anne Letford, born 28 Dec 1819, bap 27 May 1821 at Saint Luke, Chelsea. One possibility is that this Ann Cazaly was a second marriage for Ann Lorimer if James had died early; this would make James William and Mary Letford half-siblings.) Married 31 May 1845 at the Register Office in the district of St Giles in the Fields & St George Bloomsbury to Clarissa HARRISON (ref marriage cert). She was born c1823 at Chelsea, Middlesex (ref 1851 census) and was the daughter of John Harrison, portrait-painter, and Sophia. The marriage was registered in June qtr 1845 at St Giles etc, London Middlesex (ref FreeBMD). Parish of St Pancras. City of Marylebone. Address 6 Harrington Street, St Pancras, London. Together with children Clarissa (4), Sophy (3), Mary (1) and 2 servants: James W Cazaly. Head. Mar. Age 42. Collecting Clerk at a Brewery. Born Middlesex, not known. Clarissa Cazaly. Wife. Mar. Age 28. Born Middlesex, Chelsea. Clarissa and the three daughters emigrated to New South Wales, Australia, on the vessel 'Prince Alfred', (listed as Mrs Cazaly and three Misses Cazaly) arriving 14 Mar 1859 at Sydney. Next to them on the passenger list is Mr Harrison. There is a listing for James William Cazaly, Accountant, 41 Cumberland Street Sydney in 1861 & 1863 Sands Directories. James, his wife and 3 daughters moved to New Zealand, arriving on the vessel Hero by Cabin having left Sydney on the 10 Feb 1872 (ref Daily Southern Cross 17 Feb 1872 Shipping Intelligence). On 24 Sep 1872 James committed suicide by strychnine poisoning in his home at Upper Grey Street, Auckland. He was a director of the Green Harp Goldmining Company and had arrived some months previously with a large sum of money obtained from mining which he invested in this company which then collapsed causing many people to be bankrupted. It was believed that he had lost about 3000 pounds. The Coroner's Inquest includes Clarissa's deposition. James, aged 63, was an accountant. Their daughter Mary Ann Harrison Cazaly was present in the house and gave evidence also. The verdict was that the deceased took poison knowingly while in a sound state of mind, but in a state of mental depression. [References found online in advanced search of the news archives at Google; Daily Southern Cross newspaper 25 Sep 72 (Report) & 26 Sep 72 (Coroner's Inquest) & 30 Sep 72 (Service)] The family returned to Australia. For the past week the police of the metropolis have been enquiring for a Mr. Ernest Charles Cazaly, who left his home at 95 Victoria-avenue, Albert-park, on the night of the 7th inst. He was a married man, who had been living with his wife at the address given, and was a brother of Mr. Clarence Cazaly, of the Builder's Exchange, Flinders-street. The missing man was rather eccentric in his manner when last seen, and though an excellent and detailed description was widely circulated, nothing has since been heard of him. The discovery of a man's body at Yarraville yesterday indicates, however, that Mr. Cazaly has met with a death by drowning, for although the body has not yet been identified, the description agrees in every particular with that of the missing man, while in the pocket of the dead man was found a package of the business cards of Mr. Clarence Cazaly. The body was discovered on the north bank of the Coode Canal, near the Sugarworks, and is at present lying at the Footscray Morgue." Mentioned as deceased in his father's DC in 1922. |
