Came to Victoria, Australia c1858.
Occ: Blacksmith.
Not married. Mentioned in the will of Mary Grierson nee Burgess.

"The ordinary weekly meeting of the Committee of the Benevolent Asylum was held yesterday ...... etc... Mr. Falconer, a member of the committee, handed in a cheque for £22, being an accumulation of 7s. per week to which an inmate named Burgess had become entitled under the will of a person named Grierson, who had left Burgess 7s. per week. Mr. Falconer was a trustee of the will, and he secured the @22 for the institution, as being sometyhing towards the past maintenance of Burgess." (The Argus, 15 Sep 1871)

James died 3 Jul 1872 at Benevolent Asylum, Borough of Hotham, County of Bourke, Victoria (Vic reg 7229).

"The ordinary weekly meeting of the committee of the Benevolent Asylum was held yesterday, in the board room of the institution, the members present being Messrs. Wisewould (chairman), Hay, Marsden, Hines, Gray, Wilton, Bryant, Crouch, M'llwraith, Egain, and Dr. Hunt. The superintendent reported that there were 622 inmates in the house, of whom 428 were males, and 194 females. The medical officer reported that there were 215 patients in the hospital, and 58 patients under treatment who were not in the hospital. The following inmates had died during the week:- William Wride, a native of Yorkshire, England, aged 81, of paralysis, after being eight years in the house; George Rushford, a native of Leeds, England, aged 76, after being six years in the house; James Burgess, a native of Perthshire, Scotland, aged 73, of heart disease, after being two years in the house." Buried Melbourne General Cemetery (with Mary nee Burgess and John Grierson).
The gravestone at Melbourne General Cemetery, Presbyterian Section, Compartment G, Graves 8 and 10, contains the following inscription. The exact layout of the words is on the attached file. Those buried in the grave were family members John Grierson (1778-1855), Mary Grierson nee Burgess (1789-1870), Janet Thomas nee Grierson (1824-1861) [daughter], Janet Thomas (1849-1881) [granddaughter], James Burgess (1794-1872) [Mary's brother], Robert Jones (1856-1856) [great-grandchild], and their friend John Buchanan Davie.
"Sacred to the memory of JOHN GRIERSON formerly of the 73rd Regiment who departed this life September 20th, 1855, aged 77 years & 4 months. He was regretted by all who knew him and his end was peace and his wife MARY died March 18th, 1870, aged 83 years. Also her brother JAMES BURGESS died 1872." On the same grave - "Sacred to the memory of JANET the beloved wife of MOSES THOMAS who died on the 24th day of July 1861 aged 37 years and her daughter JANET died July 9th 1881 aged 31 years. Also their friend JOHN BUCHANAN DAVIE died 1884 aged 88 years."
